Oregan and Media Excel create cost-efficient Win CE 5.0-powered multimedia streaming client solution, targeting mobile and IP STB devices.

London, UK and Austin, Texas, 1 March 2005 - Oregan Networks Ltd., a European-based provider of IP media delivery software building blocks, and Media Excel, a provider of embedded software compression and streaming technologies, have jointly announced availability of a cost-optimised broadband Internet media client executing on the Microsoft® Windows® CE 5.0 operating system.

The solution utilises W3C standards-compliant Oregan™ Media Browser and Media Excel's software-based SoftStream® video decoder technology, the combination of which creates a flexible package of embedded technologies, incorporating remotely upgradeable media browser, client and advanced decode functionalities .

The partners are working on their first reference platform, to be based on an Intel® IP Digital Set Top Box design.

Reed Hinkel, Oregan's VP of Business Development said, "We are very pleased with the results of integration with Media Excel module on the WinCE platform. Both our companies are driven by creating optimal value for device manufacturers. Oregan Media Browser incorporates a feature-rich Web Browser and UI Engine that was created specifically for the embedded consumer electronics market, taking into consideration the limitations of this medium from the usability perspective as well as its intrinsically low processing power resources. Oregan Media Browser reduces the costs previously associated with deployment of Microsoft® Windows® CE -based devices, owing to its 2MB footprint and low memory consumption.   Oregan's implementation of Macromedia® Flash® 6.0 content player is pre-integrated with the core HTML parser, graphic renderer and font engine"

Eduardo Pérez, Ph.D, V.P. of Marketing at Media Excel said: "Media Excel's core technology SoftStream supports a complete set of popular codecs, including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.263 and H.264, delivering embedded real-time software video decode on a variety of operating systems. SoftStream resolves the problem associated with hardware-based implementations, which escalate the bill-of-materials (BOM) cost and prevent the target device from being upgraded to support emerging advanced media compression formats. Collaboration with Oregan Networks allows us to supply a complete multi-functional broadband and home media client solution, thus reducing customers' product development and time-to-market cycles."
