Oregan Networks supports Digital Home and INMPR Specifications in Middleware for Digital Media Adaptors and Networked DVD players
Intel Developer Forum, San Jose, California - September 16th 2003 - Oregan™ Networks will demonstrate their digital entertainment platform middleware, that incorporates the Intel 2003 Networked Media Product Requirements. These product enhancements will facilitate interoperability with a home network environment and simplify setup for consumers. Oregan also plans to support the Digital Home Working Group (LDNA) guidelines once they are published.
Oregan's middleware is presented on Digital Media Adapters and Network DVD players that will stream media content from a PC and access premium [online] content.
Oregan is showcasing a Wireless Network DVD player reference design provided by ALi Microelectronics, which is being offered to ODMs and OEMs as a turnkey solution. Several companies are expected to announce product plans shortly.
Oregan's middleware will also be demonstrated on a market-ready Digital Media Adapter, based on a Cirrus Logic media processor and contract manufactured by MSI of Taiwan, for supply to PC OEMs, wireless networking, and consumer electronics manufacturers worldwide.
Reed Hinkel, Oregan's VP of Business Development; Americas said, "We are pleased that the industry is continuing to move towards standardization for interoperability, delivery, and protection of online content and digital media already within the home network. Only in this manner can the market for Digital Media products reach critical mass." He added, "Oregan's key advantage has been our adoption of industry standards such as UPnP from the outset. Further, Oregan's web based user interface technology, which offers global language support, has enabled content providers to adapt existing services to the consumer electronics domain with minimal effort and cost."
Oregan has been working closely with a number of leading online media content providers to deliver premium content services to CE devices. Oregan's support of HTML and Macromedia® Flash® technologies within its middleware, enables existing content services to be rapidly repurposed for a largely TV centric audience.
A key factor in enabling online services is supporting methods used for protecting content - known as Digital Rights Management (DRM). The industry currently has no universal standard for DRM technology, and so it has been necessary for Oregan to work with content providers on a case-by-case basis to support proprietary content protection methods. However, today Oregan pledged support for the DTCP-IP standards-based specification being promoted by Intel and the 5C, for protection of digital media that is delivered to and used within a home network. Oregan will shortly unveil the first version of its middleware to support DTCP-IP in conjunction with a leading OEM product announcement.
