Oregan Networks Demonstrate Intel® NMPR-Conformance Digital Media Adaptors and Networked DVD players

Latest iteration of end-to-end digital home entertainment middleware demonstrated at IDF taiwan on Ali Corporation reference platform.

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, TAIWAN, October 13-14, 2003 - Oregan Networks demonstrate their next generation home entertainment platform, that incorporates ALi Corporation's latest highly integrated single chip solution for Digital Media Adaptors and Networked DVD players and Oregan's latest iteration of Digital Home Entertainment Middleware that includes network media streaming and TV browsing technology.

The Oregan and ALi networked DVD player reference platform is being offered to ODMs and OEMs as a turnkey solution. Several companies are expected to announce product plans shortly.

The product has been developed in conformance with the Intel 2003 Networked Media Product Requirements. These enhancements facilitate interoperability within a home network environment and simplify setup for consumers.

Oregan's middleware is also being demonstrated on a market-ready Digital Media Adaptor STB, contract manufactured by MSI of Taiwan, for supply to PC OEMs, wireless networking, and consumer electronics manufacturers worldwide.

Mark Perry, Oregan's CEO, said "Oregan has dedicated its efforts to developing a complete solution that will drive the category adoption by retail and consumers. The new Oregan and ALi Networked DVD platform benefits from support of Intel's standards for interoperability, premium web content protection and Oregan's advanced TV browser and user interface solution. Standardization within the new generation of networked CE devices will ultimately drive the volume and lower the cost of devices. The need for Digital Home convergence has been recognised by all major CE manufacturers, and we see our mission in facilitating this transition to a new pattern in content consumption." He added, "The market has seen a number of early solutions for Digital Media Adaptors and Networked DVD players. However, the platform from ALi and Oregan is the first to provide the necessary combination of audiovisual codec support and adherence to industry standards for interoperability, at a price point that is able to drive mass consumer adoption in the existing retail market place for DVD players."

The new usage scenario enables the consumer to access and share digital content regardless of source: premium broadcast and Internet content or a home collection of entertainment media.

"As the increasing number or CE brands introduce the "Networked" category of devices, it is important to ensure consumer's confidence in the ability to benefit from this feature regardless of the brand and type of device. Oregan's TV Interactor Browser and Middleware incorporates the essential building blocks of networking and rendering technology that ensure high quality of end user experience and enable CE manufacturers to easily enhance their product range with networking capabilities at fair cost. Oregan's conformance with Intel Networked Product Requirements enhances the quality and reliability," said Grace Wang, APAC Marketing Manager of Desktop Platform Group.

The key factor in enabling online services is supporting methods used for protecting content - known as Digital Rights Management (DRM). The industry currently has no universal standard for DRM technology, and so it has been necessary for Oregan to work with content providers on a case-by-case basis to support proprietary content protection methods. However, today Oregan pledged support for Digital Transmission Copy Protection (DTCP-IP), a standards-based specification being promoted by Intel and the 5C for protection of digital media that is delivered to and used within a home network. Oregan will shortly unveil the first version of its middleware to support DTCP-IP in conjunction with a leading OEM product announcement.

Oregan has been working closely with a number of leading online media content providers to deliver premium content services to CE devices. Oregan's support of HTML and Macromedia® Flash® technologies within its middleware, enables existing content services to be rapidly repurposed for a largely TV centric audience.
